Referee announced for North London derby between Tottenham and Arsenal

Referees and VAR are a hot topic right now, but Tottenham and Arsenal fans will be hoping those officiating the North London derby this weekend keep a low profile. Here’s who will be on the refereeing team for the big game.

The North London derby is always the biggest fixture in the footballing calendar for both Tottenham and Arsenal, but the upcoming clash holds extra significance at this stage of the season, with plenty to play for both teams.

Spurs need to bounce back from the defeat against Newcastle the last time out, and will have some catching up to do in order to overtake Aston Villa and claim a place in the top four this term.

Ange Postecoglou‘s men have had two weeks off and will be three games (and possibly nine points) behind Villa by the time Arsenal visit the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.

The Gunners, meanwhile, have put together back-to-back wins against Wolves and Chelsea to go three points clear at the top of the Premier League table.

Who will be the referee for Spurs vs Arsenal this weekend?

We now know who will be keeping control of affairs at the weekend in the all-important game, as the Premier League announced the officiating team for the match.

Michael Oliver will be the referee in charge. He will be assisted by Stuart Burn and Dan Cook, with Andy Madley on fourth official duty. Jarred Gillett will be in the VAR room, and will be assisted by Darren Cann.

Oliver has been on the whistle for four Arsenal games this season, and three Spurs matches. He was in charge of the 4-1 defeat to Chelsea back in November, when Tottenham were reduced to nine men.

Spurs Web Opinion

It will be interesting to see how match officials behave this weekend, given the amount of attention and criticism aimed at them after last weekend. We can probably expect very slow VAR decisions as they try their best to get things right, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a soft penalty given at some point.
