Alasdair Gold predicts Spurs may make a ‘left-field’ signing in one area

Alasdair Gold has said that Tottenham Hotspur could sign a number six independent of their pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Ederson this summer.

It has been widely reported over the last month that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp could exit Hotspur Way this summer and that the Lilywhites could enter the market for a defensive midfielder (Football.London).

Perhaps an addition in that part of the field has become particularly crucial due to Yves Bissouma’s struggles over recent months, with the Mali international’s form dropping off considerably after a strong start to the season.

Meanwhile, Rodrigo Bentancur has not managed to return to his best since returning from his long injury layoff, which is perhaps to be expected given the seriousness of the Urugwayan’s injury and the fact that he was out of action for nearly a year.

Tottenham are looking for a new number six

Gold believes that the Lilywhites might pull off a surprising signing for the number six role, backing the club’s recruitment department to use data analysis to settle on their top targets for that position.

The journalist said on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast: “Number six is a more difficult one really. In terms of I feel like a number six will be a real data signing, someone who can do a bit of everything.

“They’ve been heavily linked with Ederson and it’s a funny one with him because depending on who you speak to whether he’s a natural number six or not.

“I’ll say Ederson for that role for now, but I feel like maybe that number six role will be more of a data-based one that people are surprised by and it comes from left field, we will see.”

Ederson will be more of a number six than a number eight, particularly in Ange Postecoglou’s system. If Spurs do sign the Brazilian, he will likely be expected to compete with Yves Bissouma for a place in the starting eleven.
