‘All the noises he’s making’ – Alasdair Gold reacts to Real Madrid and Romero rumours

Alasdair Gold says that Tottenham will ask for an astronomical fee for Cristian Romero if Real Madrid make an approach for the centre-back.

Real Madrid like the look of Cristian Romero

Romero is currently with the Argentina squad as the World Champions prepare for the defence of their Copa America title.

However, the 26-year-old is now making headlines back in Europe as he is thought to have emerged as a target for Real Madrid.

It was reported on Wednesday by ESPN (as translated by Mundo Albiceleste) that Los Blancos were looking to add reinforcement to their backline and had identified the Spurs man as a potential option.

In fact, it was alleged that the European champions had already reached out to Tottenham about the deal to understand the potential conditions of any transfer operation.

Cristian Romero sounds like he is happy at Spurs

However, Gold believes that Spurs would demand an eye-watering fee from Carlo Ancelotti’s men for their vice-captain.

The journalist also pointed out that the centre-back seems quite happy to be part of Ange Postecoglou’s project at Tottenham.

When asked about the speculation linking Romero with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu, Gold told the Last Word on Spurs: “I mean, it’s the same every summer though, isn’t it? The Romero stuff, it’s just like so the main guy that everyone was linked with a big move away each summer has gone [Harry Kane] so who do we do next? Romero will do.

“It just kind of feels like we’ve moved on to another one. I thought Spurs might actually escape that this summer but it appears not. I’m fascinated to see whether that quickly dies a death or it sticks around all summer or not.

“But he’s got three years left on his contract, what was he signed for? Roughly £40 million. I mean, his fee would be astronomical, I would imagine that be what Spurs ask for because Postecoglou sees him as the leader of that backline. He loves him. He absolutely adores Romero and Romero seems to feel very similar.”

“Romero’s a massive part of what Postecoglou wants to do, the way he brings the ball out of defence. So, Spurs would be absolutely loathed to lose him this summer as well. He seems happy enough, all the noises he’s making seems he’s happy enough.

“Like I said, if Real Madrid were to seriously come in, whether that changes things is another thing. But Spurs, as you say, have got to show all the players they’re moving in the right direction.”

Spurs Web Opinion

My fear is that Romero’s head would be turned if a club of the stature of Real Madrid made a move. However, I am almost certain that Daniel Levy will scare off the La Liga giants by demanding in excess of £100m for the centre-back.
