‘Appalled by Conte’s attitude’ – Pundit gives his take on Daniel Levy’s Spurs choices

Simon Jordan has said that Daniel Levy deserves credit for the way he has run Tottenham Hotspur but insisted that Jose Mourinho was never the right fit for the North London side.

Levy is certainly not the most popular of Premier League chairmen, with a huge chunk of the Tottenham fan base being extremely critical of his work.

Many of them lay the blame for the club’s inability to win silverware since 2008 entirely on his feet and accuse him of caring only about profits instead of success.

That is an accusation that the 62-year-old himself has shot back against, insisting that he is desperate to win silverware, giving that as the reason why he went for two ‘win-first’ managers in Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho (Reuters).

Has Daniel Levy done a good job at Tottenham?

Jordan admitted that the Tottenham chairman is well aware that he needs to translate the club’s off-pitch success into silverware.

When asked if he thinks Levy has done a good job, the former Crystal Palace chairman said on talkSPORT show Simon & Souness: “I do. You can’t deny he’s a smart operator. You’ve got a £1.4 billion stadium sitting there that tells you he’s a smart operator.

“You’ve got a team that’s the most profitable team in world football and a club that’s made money every year since Daniel walked through the door, with a few notable exceptions. The problem is, he’s got an empty trophy cabinet and he’s got to get that balance right and he knows that.”

Jordan also argued that Antonio Conte did not do himself any favours with the way he behaved at Tottenham but suggested that the decision to appoint Mourinho might have been a mistake by Levy.

He added: “Do I think he got the Mourinho one right? I find it difficult to understand the dynamic of Daniel’s relationship with Mourinho and Conte because these two guys are big personalities.”

“You bring them through the door, you must have told them something, or they’re —– and they’re misrepresenting what they were told at the time when it doesn’t suit them anymore.

“I was appalled by Conte’s attitude. With Mourinho, I didn’t think it was a fit that would work because Mourinho is about spending money.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think it is fair to criticise Levy for lacking ambition in one breath and then turn around and criticise him for appointing win-first managers in Conte and Levy.

To suggest that Conte and Mourinho were not backed is a re-writing of history, with the Italian, in particular, getting most if not all of the players he wanted.
