Paul Merson has said that Micky van de Ven is not only one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League but also one of the best in his position across world football.
Van de Ven was a relative unknown to most English football fans when he arrived from Wolfsburg last summer but based on how well he has done at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, many will wonder how more clubs were not in for him.
The 22-year-old has everything that one would want in a modern-day centre-back, being quite composed, strong in duals, aggressive and possessing an extraordinary turn of pace.
It is a testament to the Dutchman’s class that despite his relative lack of experience, he has hardly needed any time to adjust to the pace and intensity of the Premier League, looking right at home in the division from day one.
Is Micky Van de Ven one of the best in the world?
Merson believes that the Netherlands international is up there with the best central defenders in the game at the moment.
The former Arsenal midfielder told the Spurs Chat Podcast: “My thoughts on Spurs this season? I have to say I think they’ve been outstanding. Loved watching them, great the way they play, a bit gung-ho, but for the neutral, great football.

“Plenty of good players. Micky Van de Ven is outstanding, he’s one of the top centre-halves in the country, without a doubt, I’d go as far as to say in the world he’s one of the top ones, a brilliant player.”

The most exciting thing about Tottenham at the minute is that the likes of Van de Ven, Brennan Johnson, Destiny Udogie and Pape Matar Sarr are nowhere near their peaks just yet and are likely to get better over the next couple of seasons.
With a couple of smart additions this summer, there is no reason why we cannot dream big for next season.
