Cristian Romero is starring at the Copa America

Argentina have begun the defence of their Copa America title in impressive fashion, with two wins from two against Canada and Chile.

The Albicelestes’ win over the latter was particularly impressive, built once again on being extremely frugal at the back, with the reigning champions yet to concede a goal in the tournament.

The tried and tested pairing of Romero and Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez at centre-back continues to impress, with the Tottenham man very much being the leader of the defensive unit.

He will need to be at his best if Lionel Scaloni’s men are to go all the way once again this summer and the Argentine press could not speak any more highly of the 26-year-old, pointing out that opposition strikers are intimidated by his mere presence.

Romero receives rave reviews once again

Tyc Sports named Romero the star of the match against Chile and gave him an 8/10 rating. They wrote: “Another outstanding performance from the best central defender of the moment. It is more than respect what he imposes on his rival. A beast. A key figure again.”

Ole rated him 7/10 and said: “Security in individual duels, good ball handling at the start and premium advances in the rival half.”

Meanwhile, Pagina 12 gave Romero an 8/10 rating and wrote: “Solid in one-on-one and always winning from above, he also decisively attacked through the centre.

“He even encouraged himself with a couple of passes between the lines as if to show that the occasional midfield role does not suit him badly.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Romero continues to show why he very much deserves to be in the conversation for the best centre-back in the world.

The Tottenham man has still not entered his peak years as a footballer and continues to go from strength to strength.
