‘Give the man a chance’ – Roy Keane comes to Ange Postecoglou’s defence at Spurs

Roy Keane has insisted that Ange Postecoglou has had a good first season at Tottenham, considering the challenges he has had to deal with and the fact that he has not managed in the Premier League before.

One can argue that Postecoglou is perhaps a victim of his own early success at Spurs. Not a lot of people gave the Lilywhites a chance of even finishing in the top six at the start of the campaign after they had lost their record goalscorer, Harry Kane.

However, the Lilywhites were playing some of the best football in the Premier League in the first half of the campaign and were keeping pace with the best sides in the division.

Over the last couple of months, Spurs have struggled to produce the same standard of performers, having looked toothless upfront while also being extremely susceptible at the back.

Roy Keane says Postecoglou needs time at Tottenham

Keane argued that even though Tottenham have fallen away over recent weeks, all things considered, the season on the whole has been a successful one for Postecoglou.

The Man Utd legend told Sky Sports: “Rightly or wrongly, we are reflecting on the last three, four or five games. But if you think back to the start of the season, there were big challenges for him,” said Keane.

“He was new to the Premier League, there were question marks over his CV, which was unfair. But he has had a pretty decent season. It’s just over the last few games where they have fallen away. You start analysing Spurs and the perception of Spurs is that there is always a softness to them. He has got to try and change that.

“He will look back on some positives at the end of the season, but to get to the next level, when you finish fifth or sixth, that next step of competing and getting into the Champions League is the hardest step. But give the man a chance.”

One only has to look at the challenges that Mikel Arteta and Jurgen Klopp had at Arsenal and Liverpool respectively at the beginning and even the difficulties Mauricio Pochettino faced in his first season at Spurs, to know that even top managers can take time to build the right foundation.

That is not to say that Postecoglou is bound to succeed at Tottenham but there is no doubt that he deserves a proper crack next season after he brings in players who are better suited to his system.
