‘Grouchy and snappy’ – Tottenham star opens up on his injury nightmare

James Maddison admitted that he struggled to cope with his extended injury layoff earlier in the season and that the frustration often crept into his personal life.

Some players just fit into certain clubs like hand to glove and that is certainly the case with Maddison at Tottenham. Spurs have had a history of creative midfielders with flair, which is why it has not taken a long time for supporters to fall in love with the 27-year-old.

The attacking midfielder had a sensational start to his time at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, arguably being the best player on show across the Premier League in the first few months of the season.

However, just when it seemed like he was about to go from strength to strength, Maddison picked up an ankle injury at the start of November which kept him out of action for the next three months.

James Maddison hates being out injured

The Spurs star, who is a father of three, including two newborn twins, admitted that the injury even interfered with his duties as a dad.

He told Sky Sports: “Physically it was tough because I ruptured the ligaments in my ankle which affected everything in my life. You’re on crutches, you’re in a boot, you can’t get around the house, you can’t really be a dad.”

Maddison confessed that the frustration was often leaking into his personal life, causing him to lose his temper with those close to him. He admitted that his family and friends were of huge help in helping him come through that phase.

He continued: “I often found when I was injured, I was getting very frustrated with not being back quicker. It would almost creep into my personal life a little bit.

“I was probably a bit more grouchy and snappy, just even with my partner and my mum and dad. It creeps in without you even realising it. So talking and getting stuff off my chest helps.

“I’m very fortunate. I’ve got a brilliant network around me. My parents, my partner, my best friends, my agent. Everything I’ve had since day one. I’ve never changed. I’m very fortunate because not everyone has that.

“My message to others would be to seek the person you can get stuff off your chest and be completely 100 per cent honest with because it definitely does help.”

Footballers have been used to the routine of training and playing since quite a young age and it can be quite debilitating when the game is suddenly taken away from you for a few months or even a year.

One can only imagine how frustrated and disappointed the likes of Ryan Sessegnon and Manor Solomon would be feeling at the moment.
