‘He’s got a longer view’ – Maddison reveals what Postecoglou tells Spurs squad all the time

James Maddison has revealed that Ange Postecoglou has made it clear to the Tottenham squad that his ambition is to compete for major honours.

Postecoglou’s first season at Spurs has undoubtedly been a successful one when considering the kind of turmoil the club were in when he took over last term.

However, looking at the Australian’s body language and listening to the way he speaks in press conferences, one gets the feeling that he is far from satisfied with what his side have achieved so far.

In fact, last week, Postecoglou was not happy with questions about the top four race, insisting that he is much more concerned about his side showing signs of progress than the race for fourth place (Football.London).

Postecoglou is all about the long-term Spurs vision

Maddison has now insisted that the 58-year-old does not make those statements for the cameras and that his messages to the squad are also about setting their sights higher than just Champions League qualification.

The attacking midfielder said (via Sky Sports’ Michael Bridge): “He relays that to us, and I don’t think he just says it for the sake of it, because he actually believes it, even with us, away from the cameras and the media, he’s all about focusing on not just the game at hand but also the bigger picture, instead of just the short-term of trying to get Champions League football just for the sake of it. He’s got a bit of a longer view on the project.”

It is not that Champions League qualification does not matter to Postecoglou. I am sure he realises how important that is for the club financially and to help attract top players.

However, the Australian is seemingly trying to get rid of the mentality of looking at a top-four finish as success, which has been pervasive at Spurs over the last decade and a half.
