‘I still talk about it’ – Heung-min Son is determined to make Spurs fans proud as captain

Son Heung-min has admitted that being handed the captain’s armband at Tottenham was a ‘major honour’ and that he is keen to repay the faith that the club have shown in him.

After Harry Kane’s departure last summer and Hugo Lloris being relegated to a peripheral role at Hotspur Way (before his eventual move to Los Angeles FC in January), Son seemed the obvious choice for the captaincy.

The South Korean is one of the longest-serving first-team players at the club and is now undoubtedly Tottenham’s biggest superstar, but it is fair to say that he was not always viewed as leadership material.

However, Son has proven since being handed the captain’s armband that he is more than ready for a leadership role, having set high standards this season and demanded the best from his teammates while also maintaining the warmness that makes him such a popular figure at the club.

Last week, The Times explained that the 31-year-old has been ‘relentless in trying to find ways to make a difference’ since being made captain last summer.

The outlet revealed that after being handed the responsibility last summer, the forward even surveyed the entire Tottenham squad about all the details of the team’s existing routines to find ways to make a difference.

Heung-min Son wants to make Spurs fans proud

Son has now opened up on the experience of being informed in front of his teammates about Postecoglou’s decision and about what it means to captain the Lilywhites.

He told TNT Sports: “It has been crazy. I still talk about it a lot. Nobody gave me any notice. It came as a surprise. I had to give a speech and all are my best friends, but I couldn’t speak because I was so nervous.

“Being captain of this club and being here almost ten years is a huge honour. I just want to do my best for the club and also for the Premier League and Korean football.”

One can tell just how much it means to Son to lead Tottenham and nothing will make me happier than to see the forward get the chance to lift a trophy as Spurs skipper.
