‘Messy effort’ – Tottenham man gets a rating of just 3/10 for his national side

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has come under criticism from the Danish media after the Tottenham man delivered a sub-par performance in Denmark’s 0-0 draw with Switzerland.

For the first time since arriving at Tottenham nearly four years ago, Hojbjerg has not been a regular starter, with Ange Postecoglou very much using him as an impact substitute when his first-choice options are fit.

As a result, the Dane’s game time had been limited, which might raise concerns about his match sharpness going into the summer’s European Championship.

In fact, Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand was even asked last week if the midfielder deserves a regular place in his starting eleven, given his struggles at Spurs, but the 51-year-old brushed aside those concerns, insisting that the Tottenham man is irreplaceable (Bold).

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg fails to impress for Denmark

However, Hojbjerg did not do much to allay the fears of fans and the Danish media on Saturday, delivering a lacklustre display against Switzerland in Copenhagen.

The 28-year-old was up against some top players in the middle of the park, with Denis Zakaria and Granit Xhaka both starting for the Swiss, and it looks like the Tottenham man failed to have much of an impact on the game.

Sport.TV2 gave Hojbjerg a rating of just 3/10 and wrote about the midfielder: “A player who needs to play a lot. And he doesn’t do that at Tottenham. Set out with several possessions, but as time went on he became too impatient and forced his game too much. A messy effort.”

Some rustiness would be natural, given Hojbjerg’s lack of starts this season, which is not something he is used to. However, one would certainly not put it beyond him to have an amazing Euros in the summer and to take Denmark deep into the tournament.
