Pundit says former Spurs manager should replace Gareth Southgate as England boss

England have endured a lacklustre start to Euro 2024, with many fans now frustrated with Gareth Southgate’s tactical setup. But should he be replaced mid-tournament? Richard Keys certainly thinks so.

Discussing the situation on BeIN Sports after England‘s dismal 0-0 draw against Slovenia on Tuesday night, Keys suggested the Three Lions will go no further in the tournament under Southgate’s stewardship.

“We’re here to win it and from what I’ve seen tonight, that [performance] is not winning the next game, let alone the tournament,” he said.

The solution, Keys suggested, is to replace Southgate. “Harry Redknapp’s sat in Dubai tonight, give him a call. [Jurgen] Klopp won’t do it but Harry, you think he wouldn’t be on a plane tomorrow morning?”

Harry Redknapp was linked with England over a decade ago

Redknapp was previously in line for the England job way back in 2012, but he claimed a £15m release clause in his Tottenham contract at the time cost him the opportunity (Daily Mail). Roy Hodgson was hired instead.

The man himself has since said he would turn down the chance to manage England if he was ever offered it again (Guardian).

The former Spurs man last managed a club in 2017, and has since acted as an advisor to Yeovil Town, and is currently with Bournemouth in a similar role.

Redknapp was manager of Tottenham from October 2008 to June 2012, and was one of the most popular and successful coaches of the club in the modern era, helping establish the Lilywhites as a force at the top of the Premier League and leading them into the Champions League.

Spurs Web Opinion

I’m sorry, I love Harry Redknapp, but this is such an outdated suggestion. Ten years ago, I’m sure we’d all be delighted to see Redknapp in the England job, but he’s simply not right for it now.

And as frustrated as I am with what I’ve seen from England, replacing Southgate mid-tournament is not the answer.
