Report: Tottenham are considering new contract for exciting 21-year-old

After impressing for the Under-21 side this season, it seems Yago Santiago may be in line for a new contract at Tottenham Hotspur.

While Ange Postecoglou‘s senior side have performed pretty well this year and have a chance at securing a top four finish in the Premier League this season, it is the youth team who are shining brightest right now.

The Tottenham Under-21 side are currently top of the table, and could go four points clear with their game in hand over nearest rivals, West Ham.

Yago Santiago has played a starring role in the team this season, registering eight goals and seven assists in 16 games for the youth side (Transfermarkt). He has featured on the bench for the senior side three times, but never made it onto the field.

New contract heading Yago Santiago’s way?

Now, it looks like his fine form and promising future will be rewarded with a new contract. Santiago’s current deal expires next summer.

According to club insider John Wenham for Tottenham News, Tottenham are plotting a “strategic move” to help Santiago progress, by offering him a new contract and lining up a loan move for him for next season.

The left winger has been seen to “thrive at higher levels” and the club are keen to reward him for the “significant strides” he has taken over the last 18 months.

Wenham said: “He’s made some solid progress over the past 18 months, and I was hoping that he would go out on loan in January. That didn’t happen, and I think the plan now will be to reward him with a new three-year contract before sending him out on loan next season.

“If it were up to me, he would go out to League One first, and then if he is doing well, send him on loan to the Championship for the second half of the season. I think this would be a good move for Santiago and a just reward after the fantastic season he has had this year.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Yago Santiago is looking like a really exciting prospect in our youth team now, and he has to get a loan move next season to really show what he can do at a higher level. I agree a switch to League One would be the best fit, but I would be wary about bumping him up to the Championship as we’ve seen how that hasn’t quite worked for Alfie Devine this year.
