It was one of Mauricio Pochettino’s final signings of his five-year spell in North London, although the signing didn’t work out, it could still be set to land Tottenham some decent cash for the upcoming summer transfer window.

Jack Clarke joined Spurs early in the 2019 transfer window, being the club’s first addition to the team since Lucas Moura some 18 months earlier. Sky Sports revealed at the time the fee was around ‘£8.5m’ with Clarke penning a four-year deal.

Clarke’s impressive 22 Championship appearances, in which he netted twice as well as assisting two, at just 18 has earned him the move but his Tottenham time was bewildering, being sent back to Leeds on loan for the following season, only to play a mere 19 minutes until the was recalled in January. The winger’s loan moves hardly became any more successful either, being sent out to QPR that January in order to seek the elusive game time he couldn’t find at Leeds, Clarke only got 139 minutes at the R’s too.

Following limited minutes under Jose Mourinho and another infuriating loan to another Championship side, Stoke City, Jack finally found a home at League One promotion-pushing, Sunderland, who made Clarke’s loan permanent in 2022, seeing him depart Spurs after just 96 minutes played in Lilywhite.

£30m is now the price being quoted for former Spur, Jack Clarke

Clarke found form on Wearside, tallying nine goals and twelve assists in his debut Championship season, with his latest campaign, and third with Sunderland subjecting him to plenty of Premier League interest, scoring fifteen goals and assisting a further four at just 23 years of age.

Wolves are one of the clubs circling around Clarke, with GiveMeSport reporting that the Black Country club are ‘interested’ in signing the winger with Sunderland’s ‘asking price of around £25-30 million’ being ‘just above Wolves’ valuation’.

Crystal Palace are reported in the same article to also be interested in signing Clarke, with the player’s agent being clear in admitting ‘hopefully this summer we’ll probably see Jack moving’ going onto also reveal that ‘there was a couple of bids that come in from Lazio’ on the No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast.

GiveMeSport confirmed later in the piece that Tottenham’s deal with Sunderland for Clarke did indeed involve a sell-on clause ‘believed to be 25 per cent’. The clause would see Tottenham receive a welcome extra £7.5m should Clarke be sold for Sunderland’s valuation.

Spurs Web Opinion

It was clear that Jack Clarke needed to move away from Spurs to progress his career, with many fans feeling sorry for the youngster who never performed poorly in his short cameos for Spurs but always struggled to be a permanent fixture, even with just the squad.

His performances at Sunderland, especially in the previous two seasons have been incredible, going past players with ease whilst finally adding a clinical touch to his game.

Although the sell on fee will be a good addition to the summer transfer budget, perhaps Spurs could take a look at using the clause to buy back Clarke on a cheaper deal.
