‘Sincere apologies’ – Bentancur breaks his silence on Heung-min Son comments

It has been a strange week for Rodrigo Bentancur and Heung-min Son, as the former became embroiled in a controversy over potentially racial comments regarding his Tottenham captain. Now, Bentancur has taken to social media to state the matter has been well and truly resolved.

What did Bentancur say?

In an interview with Uruguayan press outlet, Por la Camiseta (via New York Times), Bentancur appeared to suggest Heung-min Son and his cousins all look the same, fuelling racial stereotypes regarding Asian people.

The comments caused uproar, and at the time, Bentancur posted on his Instagram that he had made a ‘bad joke’ and did not mean to cause any offence.

Since then, Son himself has posted on Instagram to insist he and Bentancur are ‘united’ and that he understands it was a mistake on the part of his Spurs teammate.

Bentancur and Son have cleared the air

Now, Bentancur has commented on the situation again, with a heartfelt explanation of how he and Son have reconciled.

He posted: “I would like to communicate to all fans and everyone who follows us that after my interview where I referred to Son and no one else, I have spoken to him and, logically given our deep friendship, he understands it was only an unfortunate misunderstanding. All has been clarified and solved with my friend.

“If someone felt offended because of my words through this media tool I would like to offer my sincere apologies.

“But I also would like you to know that never, never I referred to anyone else. Only to Son and for that reason I’ve never had the intention to offend directly or indirectly anyone. A big hug and all my respect to everyone.”

I think that should be the matter fully put to bed now. It was obviously a very stupid thing to say from Bentancur, but he and Son have clearly spoken and have no issues with it.

As long as he understands how his comments were interpreted and how wrong it was, we should trust that he will be better in future.
