‘Technical issues’ – Rio Ferdinand comes to Micky Van de Ven’s defence after Spurs mistakes

After lavishing Micky van de Ven with high praise before the Newcastle United game at the weekend, Rio Ferdinand has explained away the Tottenham Hotspur man’s poor performance in that match and insists it was probably a one-off.

It’s hard to argue against Micky van de Ven being the best signing of the season. He’s certainly been a key addition to the Tottenham squad, and has rapidly become one of the best centre-halves in the whole Premier League.

The Dutchman has impressed many across his 23 appearances this season, scoring two goals along the way (Transfermarkt). One of those goals came in the win over Nottingham Forest just last weekend, with van de Ven ending up the toast of the town thanks to that strike.

However, just a week later, van de Ven endured a fall from grace, after being right at the heart of two of Newcastle‘s goals in a 4-0 win for the Magpies.

Micky van de Ven is still top-class

Within the space of less than two minutes, van de Ven suffered two disastrous slips to allow Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon to put the ball in the back of the net and give the home side an unassailable lead after just 30 minutes.

Before the game, Ferdinand had described van de Ven as an “an absolute Rolls Royce of a centre-half.” After the match, Lynsey Hipgrave reminded him of this comment, to which he replied: “Sometimes Rolls-Royces do have technical issues, they have to go through the MOT and get a once-over.”

Every player has an off-day sometimes, and that was van de Ven’s first bad performance in a Spurs shirt. He will get over it and be back to his best against Arsenal, I’m sure. He is still a top defender, and has the potential to be the best in the league.
