Tottenham star admits he once hid a hamstring injury in order to play

Pedro Porro has revealed to the Portuguese media that he once hid an injury in order to play for Sporting Lisbon in a big game.

While Porro had been earmarked as a top talent from quite a young age, having spent some time on the books of Manchester City, it was at Lisbon that the right-back really made a name for himself and hit the spotlight.

His impressive displays in the Portuguese capital saw Tottenham part ways with €45m (£39.7m) to bring the Spaniard to the club in January of last year.

Porro did not have the smoothest of starts to life in North London, with questions being raised initially about the defensive side of his game.

However, the Tottenham man has well and truly silenced his critics so far this season and has been one of the best right-backs on show across the Premier League.

Pedro Porro has hidden an injury in the past

The 24-year-old, who is expected to be named in the Spain squad for this summer’s Euros, has now been speaking about his time at Sporting and revealed that he once hid an injury from Ruben Amorim and his coaching staff.

Porro told Expresso (as relayed by A Bola): “In the title game against Boavista I was injured. I never told this, but three days before I had injured my hamstring muscles, but I didn’t tell anyone because I knew the importance of the game and I wanted to play, or yes, or yes!

“I lasted 30 minutes [he was replaced after 17 minutes, by João Pereira], I felt a stronger pain, but I knew I had to give everything because the title couldn’t escape.”

Coaches will certainly not appreciate players hiding their injuries and would expect them to be honest. However, it would be naive to think that this does not go on as most players would not want to miss high-profile games.

In fact, one can argue that Harry Kane was not 100 per cent fit for the Champions League final back in 2019 but Pochettino would not have had a choice but to name him in the starting eleven once the striker declared himself fit.
