Alasdair Gold says Spurs signing player on loan is unlikely, despite reports

Tottenham Hotspur have once again been linked with a move for Kalvin Phillips, but further reports suggest the Lilywhites are not looking to sign the Manchester City midfielder right now.

It has been a busy and very successful January transfer window for Spurs so far, with two new signings already through the door halfway through the month.

Beyond the signings of Timo Werner and Radu Dragusin, it is widely expected that Spurs will try to sign a central midfielder next, with a chance that could happen during the winter window (The Independent).

Conor Gallagher was the talk of the town last week, with Spurs reportedly lining up a sensational move for the current Chelsea captain. However, it is now believed they may have to wait until the summer to make that happen (The Sun).

Another player Spurs were linked with in the summer, Kalvin Phillips, has re-emerged once more, with the City midfielder thought to be of interest (Gazzetta dello Sport via Sport Witness).

Do Spurs want Kalvin Phillips or not?

The latest from Football Insider claims Spurs may look to take Phillips on loan until the end of the season, with “a loan fee between £5-6million” rumoured to be required to seal the deal.

In that report, former Tottenham scout Bryan King said: “Personally, if they are looking for a central midfielder, and there has been a lot of talk, I’d be looking at Phillips at Man City… He has the kind of energy that Ange [Postecoglou] likes..”

But, a subsequent report from Football.London suggests otherwise. While the player does seem “set to leave” his current club, it is thought Spurs “are not looking to make a move for [Phillips] at this time.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I’m not entirely sold on Kalvin Phillips being the right fit for us. We want a dynamic number 8, and Phillips has always been more of a sturdy defensive midfielder.

I think I would rather keep Hojbjerg than sign Phillips, to be honest.
