Opinion: Five things we learned from Tottenham’s 3-0 win over Sheffield United

Tottenham Hotspur at least finished the season in style this evening with a 3-0 away win over Sheffield United, capping off a rather successful debut campaign under Ange Postecoglou.

Let’s take a look at the five things we learned:

And breathe!

On a day where it could have gone wrong for Tottenham, they managed to secure a top-five finish, narrowly finishing above Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea in sixth. And to make matters even better, Man City clinched the title ahead of Arsenal. Time to enjoy the summer!

Europa League Football

We now know that no matter what happens in the cups and European competitions this season, Tottenham have qualified for the 2024/25 Europa League. I think this is a real blessing in disguise for the Lilywhites, giving Postecoglou a real chance to compete for a trophy, rather than taking on too much too soon with the Champions League.

Pedro Porro MOTM

It was another Man of the Match performance for Pedro Porro this evening, after he hammered home yet another fine finish to put Spurs 2-0 up. The Spanish right-back also put a chance on a plate for Cristian Romero to spoon wide, as well as a number of superb balls in behind for the likes of Johnson and Son. And all that while keeping a clean sheet too. Spurs need to build that right side around him!

Two in, Two out

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Emerson Royal may have made their final competitive appearances off the bench for Spurs if rumours are to be believed. A big thank you and good luck to both players if they do end up leaving. But with two potentially on the way out, we also saw Dane Scarlett and Mikey Moore get more minutes for the Lilywhites, showing that the future is bright. And with the likes of Ashley Phillips, Alfie Devine, Jamie Donley and Will Lankshear in the ranks too, it’s exciting times for the Hotspur Way academy!

Off to Oz!

Although the season is over, we’re straight off to Australia now! Tottenham fly to Melbourne to take on Newcastle United in a post-season friendly on Wednesday. Why is it happening? No one really knows. Will the players be up for it with the Euros and Copa America on the horizon? Surely not. But hopefully it will be a bit of fun nonetheless!
