Postecoglou explains why Spurs will probably not make any £100m signings

Ange Postecoglou has said that even though Tottenham Hotspur are in a strong financial position, the club have to make the right recruitment decisions in the summer and are not in a position to spend £100m on one player like some of their rivals have done recently.

While several top sides across the Premier League are worried about falling foul of the Profit and Sustainably Rules, that is not an immediate concern for Tottenham, given how substantially the North London club have operated.

That is why the Lilywhites were the biggest spenders in England during the January window and Spurs fans will be hoping that the club follow that up with a strong summer.

However, Postecoglou insisted that Tottenham cannot afford to throw away their financial advantage by making bad decisions.

When asked if Spurs are in a much stronger position than their rivals heading into the summer, he told Football.London: “I would agree with that perspective but I have always felt with those things it is not what you spend, it is how you spend it.

“I have always believed that and will continue to believe that. You are right the club will be in a great position from a financial perspective to continue to grow our team but if we make bad decisions, we don’t have an advantage.

“Even if you are not in that position, you can still make progress, it is still about the decisions you make with what you have. I agree we are in a position where there is an opportunity for us in the summer window to continue to build a team.”

Tottenham will not be signing £100m players

The Australian insisted that Tottenham are not in a position where they can spend astronomical amounts on a single signing.

When asked if the club are well positioned to maximise their advantage, he responded: “To a certain extent but I don’t think we are in a position to spend £100million on a player, if that is what you are suggesting. That is not the case and I don’t think it will ever be the case for the club. Our competitors are, irrespective of their positions.

“When you look at our two transfer windows so far we have done really well to pitch it to the level that we need to pitch it and bringing in real quality players who have all increased in value since they have been here. There is more to come from that. The premise that we are in a good position, I agree with, but it is up to us to take advantage of that.”

When pushed on why Tottenham will not spend £100m on one player, the Spurs boss said: “It is purely financial. If I had the luxury of £100million, I would rather get two £50million players. Cor that is great isn’t it? Wonderful. The world I have come from!”

When it was pointed out to Postecoglou that Arsenal had a similar policy but decided to abandon that and spend £100m on Declan Rice, the 58-year-old said: “Yeah, you could be right. It could just be my background and conservative nature where I have come from.

“I have never been in that kind of position, I always felt that it is really important how you use the funds you have available and know they are not limitless.

“If we can, and somebody tells me we can, then I would gladly spend it, mate. I try to put limits on my wife’s spending and they try to put limits on mine. It works better that way, just a bit of advice.”

Spurs Web Opinion

With the Premier League now strictly implementing the PSR rules, I do not think we will see any £100m transfers in the next couple of years. The market had started adjusting to the new normal in January and I expect that downward trend to continue in the summer.
