‘A brilliant player’ – Pundit questions whether Spurs star can be trusted anymore

Chris Sutton has said that despite Cristian Romero’s brilliance as a footballer, the centre-back runs the risk of costing Tottenham with his stupidity.

There has been a lot said and written about Romero’s nasty tackle on Callum Wilson during Tottenham’s win over Newcastle, mainly because the Argentine only recently returned from a three-match suspension after picking up a red card.

Referee Chris Kavanagh gave the Spurs star a yellow but Sky Sports trio, Gary Neville, Michael Dawson and Jamie Redknapp were unanimous in their assessment that the 25-year-old was lucky to escape without a red (Sky Sports via The Mirror).

Speaking to talkSPORT (12/12/23 at 9:40 am), Jamie O’Hara questioned if the centre-back will ever mend his ways, admitting that he is now becoming a problem for Ange Postecoglou’s men.

Can Cristian Romero be trusted at Tottenham?

Sutton has questioned if Spurs fans and Postecoglou could ever completely trust Romero, given his tendency to fly into dangerous challenges.

While the pundit acknowledged the former Juventus star’s quality as a player, he insisted that the defender can cost the side at any time.

The former Celtic man told BBC 606: “You look at the games, toe-to-toe with City, should’ve been out of sight against City. One thing I want to talk about from the Tottenham victory, Romero, if you’re a Spurs fan you watch that challenge.

“He’s a brilliant player, isn’t he? Brilliant defender, but he kills them at times, he absolutely kills Spurs at times, it was a stupid challenge that should’ve been a red. He is so reckless, can he be trusted?”

Romero plays with his heart and is an emotive character. So, I doubt any advice on needing to cut out his rash tendencies is going to have the desired effect as the centre-back is going to play on instinct when he steps out onto the pitch.
