‘A great signing’ – Journalist says Spurs could land midfielder for just £20m this month

Dean Jones has now become the latest journalist to talk up Tottenham’s interest in Royal Antwerp midfielder Arthur Vermeeren, revealing that the Lilywhites could sign the Belgian starlet for a cut-price fee.

All signs at the moment are that Vermeeren could evolve into the next big superstar of Belgian football, with the youngster already having been capped twice for the Red Devils despite being just 18 years of age.

If there are any doubts over whether the midfielder belongs at the highest level, he has dispelled those completely with his performances in the Champions League this season, which included a statement display in Antwerp’s 3-2 win over Barcelona.

It has been widely reported over the last few weeks that both Spurs and Arsenal have sent scouts to watch the teenager in action in action this season (90 min).

Last week, The Sun even asserted that Tottenham have moved to the front of the queue for the teenager’s signature ahead of the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, and Borussia Dortmund as Ange Postecoglou’s aims to pull off a sensational deal for the midfielder.

Plenty of competition for Arthur Vermeeren

Jones has said that Spurs would be aware that they would have to see off plenty of competition from many top clubs to land Vermeeren.

However, he opined that the Antwerp star would be a fantastic addition to the Lilywhites and suggested that a bid of around £20m would be enough to take the youngster to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Jones told GiveMeSport: “I think Vermeeren is a really good player to be looking at. I’m sure Spurs will know that there have been other Premier League clubs looking at him including Arsenal.

“If you’re going to be challenging these teams then you want to be in for the same level of player as them and Vermeeren is available for a reasonably reasonably cheap rate as well. You’ll get him for about £20m from what I understand.

“He’s a really good player. He’s so young but already has that Champions League pedigree about him. He is wise beyond his years. Genuinely so good in the centre of the park. He would be a great signing for Tottenham.”

Spurs Web Opinion

Tottenham would be a very attractive destination for up-and-coming talent such as Vermeeren, given the style of football the club are now playing as well as Postecoglou’s reputation for backing young players. Spurs may perhaps even be considering singing the 18-year-old and loaning him back to Royal Antwerp until next summer.
