Alasdair Gold explains why many are impressed by Spurs landing Rob Mackenzie

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has revealed that Tottenham’s capture of Rob Mackenzie is seen as an impressive coup in the footballing industry.

Following Johan Lange’s appointment as Spurs’ technical director, it emerged a few days ago that Mackenzie, who worked under the Dane as Aston Villa’s head of recruitment, would follow him to the North London club (Matt Law).

Gold has now confirmed Mackenzie will start his role as Tottenham’s chief scout next week, explaining that he is very familiar with the club, having worked as the head of player identification at the Lilywhites for 19 months back in 2015/16.

The journalist reveals that the 38-year-old’s return to Spurs is seen as ‘an impressive capture’ within the game.

Rob Mackenzie is a great hire for Tottenham Hotspur

Mackenzie, who has a background in analytics, is said to have played an important role in the identification of the likes of Riyad Mahrez, N’Golo Kante and Jamie Vardy during his time at Leicester City (before joining Spurs).

He is thought to be famed for his ability to use an analytical approach to find undiscovered gems, with those who know him describing him as a “very thorough” person who does not suffer fools.

Gold adds that not only was Lange a fan of Mackenzie but a number of people at Tottenham were already keen to bring the latter on board.

Scott Munn and Daniel Levy have seemingly given Johan Lange the freedom to build his own team and it is unsurprising that the Dane has turned to those who he knows well. Time will tell if the change in structure proves to be successful.
