Alasdair Gold names five contenders to be Tottenham captain tomorrow in the FA Cup

Football.London’s Alasdair Gold has named Ben Davies, Guglielmo Vicario, Rodrigo Bentancur, Pedro Porro, and surprisingly, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, as potential contenders to wear the captain’s armband in Son Heung-min’s absence.

Ange Postecoglou has a decision to make regarding who wears the armband after Son departed for the Asian Cup as both of Spurs’ vice-captains, Cristian Romero and James Maddison, are out injured.

The Athletic’s Jack Pitt-Brooke reported on Tuesday that Davies is the obvious choice, having worn the arm in the Carabao Cup tie against Fulham back in August.

However, he suggested that Postecoglou could hand the armband to Vicario instead as the goalkeeper had proven his leadership qualities since arriving at the club in the summer.

Who should be Tottenham captain vs Burnley?

Gold also mentions Davies as the obvious candidate but points out that the Welshman might not be a guaranteed starter if Tottenham sign a centre-back over the coming days.

He also names Vicario as the second in his list, stating that the Italian has emerged as a popular figure in the dressing room.

The journalist suggests that Postecoglou might feel that either one of Rodrigo Bentacnur or Pedro Porro could also handle the additional leadership responsibility.

Finally, Gold states that Hojbjerg would have been the obvious choice to wear the captain’s armband a little while ago but adds that the Dane is now unlikely to do so, having been reduced to a bit-part role this season.

Spurs Web Opinion

I do not think it really makes a big difference who wears the armband for three matches or so before Cristian Romero returns from his injury.

In fact, I do not think Postecoglou would even spend as much time thinking about his decision as Gold and Pitt-Brooke took to write their respective articles on the topic.
