Alasdair Gold reports Spurs identified two top targets using data analysis

Football.London have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur have arrived at Edmond Tapsoba and Micky van de Ven as their two top centre-back targets after analysing the pair’s data.

It was reported by The Telegraph back in May that Daniel Levy is set to invest significantly in the data and analytics department at Tottenham in an effort to revolutionise the club’s recruitment.

The report added that the Spurs chairman has been persuaded to do so after seeing the success that the likes of Brighton and Brentford have had over recent years in using data from the betting sector to influence recruitment decisions.

The outlet revealed that the North London club had held discussions with various betting experts over developing a data model to help analyse and assess over-performing players in smaller leagues.

Numbers have highlighted Tapsoba and Van de Ven

According to Gold’s latest update, it is the number crunching that has led Spurs towards Tapsoba and Van de Ven.

The journalist explains that the data analysis performed at Hotspur Way marked out the Bayer Leverkusen and the Wolfsburg stars as the perfect candidates for Ange Postecoglou’s system.

Spurs Web Opinion

While one can understand why Spurs fans are getting frustrated that the club have not yet snapped up either Tapsoba or Van de Ven, I wonder if that has to do with the uncertainty surrounding Harry Kane’s future.

The club might be considering the fact that their budget for the centre-back role (and the other positions) would go up significantly if Kane completes a big-money switch to Bayern.
