Ange Postecoglou explains the success of Brennan Johnson in win over Palace

Reflecting on his team’s 3-1 win over Crystal Palace this evening, Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou was full of praise for both Brennan Johnson and Timo Werner.

Tottenham had to come from behind to secure an all-important win over Crystal Palace today, and a large part of that turnaround was down to the performance of Brennan Johnson.

The young winger entered the field of play on the hour mark, and ended up changing the game entirely for the home side.

His tenacity and determination to win the ball from Palace defender Joachim Andersen, and the vision to lay in Timo Werner for his first ever Spurs goal, brought Ange Postecoglou‘s side level on 77 minutes.

Later, Johnson was involved in a scrap for the ball on the halfway line, before the ball broke to Heung-min Son, with the Spurs skipper racing through and slotting home to wrap up the win.

Wingers were key to Spurs win

Speaking to the press (via Football.London) after the game, Postecoglou was asked about the involvement of Johnson, and while he celebrated that performance, he also praised Werner’s display, too.

He said: “I thought Brennan was good but I thought all of them were good tonight. In those moments we work hard with our wide players to make sure they’re in the right areas and a couple of times tonight we just weren’t when the ball was flashed across.

“Brennan did fantastically well to win back possession and when he’s played it across it’s the other winger that’s there. From our perspective that’s a really important part because it’s not by accident. Again you’ve got to be there and I thought Timo, he missed the chance in the first half and he was a constant threat to them and was in the right area for the goal.”

I was worried both Werner and Johnson were going to end the day with criticism coming their way, but in the end the latter was absolutely outstanding and worked so hard to create the goal, and Werner will be buzzing to finally get off the mark, too.
