Club director admits they have been tracking Spurs player ‘for a long time’

Sevilla sporting director Victor Orta has revealed that Alejo Veliz has been on his radar for quite a while, backing the striker to significantly improve the La Liga club’s attack.

Sevilla have struggled to score goals this season, having found the back of the net just 27 times in 21 league games so far this season, which is why they are languishing dangerously close to the relegation zone.

They will hope that Veliz, who completed a loan move to the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium on transfer deadline day, can remedy their problems upfront as they look to try and steer themselves to safety.

The highly-rated Argentine did not make a single start at Tottenham during the first half of the campaign but he did show glimpses of the threat he poses in front of goal in his cameos off the bench for the North London side.

The 20-year-old will be hoping to demonstrate to his employers that he can shine at the highest level and Orta is certainly convinced that the youngster can add a lot to the Andalusian side, admitting that he previously even tried to take the striker to Leeds.

Sevilla have had their eye on Veliz for some time

The former Leeds director of football told Estadio Deportivo about Veliz’s arrival in Seville: “We have been following Alejo for a long time, from Leeds. He was a footballer with a record transfer when he went to Tottenham.

“We believe he is a very good option for us. We believe that Alejo Véliz brings fresh air. At the top, we already have experienced people, but we wanted to rejuvenate that area.

“We believe he has a lot of quality to improve what there is. Alejo’s youth means giving energy at the top.”

Sevilla are not blessed with great options upfront, which is why one would expect Veliz to get plenty of game time once he reaches full fitness.

Postecoglou will be keeping a close eye on the youngster to see how he gets on in Spain, with the 20-year-old potentially having a chance to make the case to the Australian that he is ready to play a prominent first-team role at Tottenham next season.
