‘Compelling case’ – Postecoglou challenges Spurs youngster to impress him

Dane Scarlett is now back at Tottenham Hotspur after enduring a disappointing loan spell at Ipswich Town, and Ange Postecoglou has discussed how this can be an excellent opportunity for the young striker to now push on and work his way into the Spurs first team.

At the start of the season, there were high hopes for Dane Scarlett and his temporary switch to Championship side Ipswich Town. However, with the Tractor Boys exceeding all expectations in their return to the second tier of English football, Scarlett found his opportunities limited.

The 19-year-old made just 12 appearances for Ipswich in the first half of the campaign, all of which came from the bench, adding up to a measly 190 minutes of action (Transfermarkt).

It is no surprise then that Spurs made the decision to recall the youngster and bring him back into the fold within Ange Postecoglou‘s squad. The Tottenham boss previously commented that this ‘made sense’ and that it was ‘good’ to have Scarlett back (Football.London).

Postecoglou lays down the gauntlet for Scarlett

Now, Postecoglou has gone into more detail about what the future may hold for Scarlett now he is back in North London, and suggested there is a big chance for the player to make his mark this season.

Speaking to the press (via Football.London), Postecoglou said: “It works that he’s back with us, he trains every day, he’s got an opportunity to show what he can do. That’s the life of a footballer. There’s no point… he went to Ipswich to play, he didn’t for whatever reason.

“He’s got to take some responsibility for that. It didn’t work out but he’s back here now, training with us and like all the other young players, they are before me every day and can put a compelling case to play.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I wish things had played out differently for Dane Scarlett at Ipswich, but I am quite excited to see him in action for Spurs in the second half of the season. With Sonny at the Asia Cup and Alejo Veliz injured, there’s every chance we will see Scarlett very soon.
