‘I want to play for Tottenham’ – Defender reveals his aims for the future

Djed Spence has admitted that he wants to prove himself at Tottenham Hotspur and dreams of being a big part of the club’s future.

Spence was seen as one of the best young talents in the Championship just 18 months ago but his career has stalled since then, with the youngster struggling to get opportunities at Spurs while his loan spell at Leeds United ended prematurely in January.

The young full-back subsequently joined Genoa on a temporary deal until the end of the current season, with the Italian club having the option to sign him permanently for £8.5m.

Over the last couple of months, some sources have claimed that the 23-year-old might have already played his final game for Tottenham (The Sun’s Martin Lipton – The Spurs Show).

However, the former Middlesbrough man believes that he can still have a future under Ange Postecoglou at N17.

Djed Spence wants to remain at Tottenham

Spence told The Athletic: “I want to play for Tottenham. I want to be a big part of the plan but we’ve got to see how things go, have a discussion with the manager and everyone.

“It’s a big difference with the new manager, I did pre-season with him — he’s a good guy, he has good training sessions, he likes to play football, it’s a new environment at the club. I think everyone’s enjoying it and doing well, I’m pleased for them.

“I don’t think the Tottenham fans know me as a player. They’ve probably seen me from Forest days but I haven’t played so they don’t know what I’m capable of. The best is yet to come. Wherever I’ll be, I can hit the ground running and show everyone what I’m capable of doing.”

Spence spent six months in Ligue 1 with Rennes last season and is now getting a taste of Serie A with Genoa, and he believes that these experiences will make him a more complete player.

The right-back said about his moves abroad: “It will make me a better player, you always learn something when you go abroad or play for a different club, so it’s taking something from each club and country and sticking into one and becoming a complete player.

“You always grow as a person and you’re always learning from the experiences, I’m learning every day and I’m enjoying it.”

At 23 years of age, Spence is not a youngster anymore and if Ange Postecoglou felt that he had a future within the Spurs first team squad, the Australian would not have allowed him to go out on loan.

Whether or not Genoa activate the option to buy him permanently, I believe we have already seen the last of the right-back in Spurs colours at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
