Tottenham’s pursuit of one midfielder may have just hit a snag, after Serie A side and Europa League winners, Atalanta, have already submitted a bid for a reported Spurs target.

O’Riley could swap Scotland for Italy

The latest update on the situation regarding Celtic’s Matt O’Riley comes from Fabrizio Romano, who explained that Atalanta have lodged a bid for the midfielder, while negotiations are also ongoing with Premier League sides.

Romano tweeted: “Atalanta submit formal proposal to sign 23 year old midfielder Matt O’Riley from Celtic. Negotiations ongoing with PL clubs also keen but Atalanta are pushing, first bid has been sent.”

This comes alongside a little more detail from Relevo reporter, Matteo Moretto, who said: “Atalanta has already started official negotiations with Celtic for Matt O’Riley, a left-footed midfielder with a contract expiring in 2027.

“The talks between the parties are positive and in the next few hours the Italian club wants to try to get closer to the economic requests of the Scots. The footballer, ready for a new adventure.”

Ange Postecoglou may have wanted a reunion with O’Riley

Spurs have already been linked with the Danish midfielder, with Ange Postecoglou believed to be interested in reuniting with the player he brought to Celtic back in 2022 (GiveMeSport).

West Ham were mentioned in that report as a club also looking at O’Riley.

Meanwhile, journalist Dean Jones has told the Rank Ultras FC podcast that he believes O’Riley will be targeted by a number of Premier League clubs, and that he will want to move to the English top flight, too.

Spurs Web Opinion

Matt O’Riley is a great player and could be exactly the kind of holding midfielder we need at Spurs. Sadly, it seems we may get left behind on this one with Atalanta moving fast for the Dane already.

I think we would need to move someone like Hojbjerg on quickly if we were to get in on this deal.
