Giovani Lo Celso names his favourite position in Postecoglou’s system at Spurs

Giovani Lo Celso has admitted that the number eight position is his favourite under Ange Postecoglou, which is where he was deployed against Bournemouth.

Leading into last summer’s transfer window, many would have expected Lo Celso to be one of the first players to depart Tottenham, with the Argentine struggling to settle at the club ever since his switch from Real Betis in 2019.

Barring a brief period under Jose Mourinho during his first season at North London, we have never really seen the best of the 27-year-old in a Spurs shirt, but the midfielder is now showing signs that he has turned a corner.

In the absence of James Maddison, Lo Celso has thrived as the most advanced midfielder in Postecoglou’s system, putting him in what was arguably his best performance for the club in a long time in the 3-1 win over Bournemouth on Sunday.

Lo Celso loves playing as a number eight at Spurs

The Argentina international remarked that he is loving the number eight/ten role that he is currently playing, admitting that he is enjoying being part of the new-look Spurs side.

When asked what his best position is, Lo Celso told Tottenham’s matchday programme (as relayed by Football.London):: “It’s where I’m playing right now, as an eight, I love it. I see a lot of the ball with this coach – I feel more at ease and really love seeing action because every player knows what they need to do.

“Over the years I’ve played in various positions, I feel most comfortable playing further forward in a number eight role or behind the striker – I prefer this area of the pitch -or I can play deeper if that’s what the coach wants.

“I’m just really happy and enjoying this new era at the club with my teammates and feel more and more settled.

“I think that the coach has got the most out of all of the players because he has a clear playing style that we love – me especially – and we’ve always shown our best side and had chances to win even when we’ve lost.”

It was apparent right from pre-season that the number ten/eight role in Ange’s system is perfect for a player of Lo Celso’s attributes.

The midfielder was not a particularly good fit for the likes of Mourinho, Conte and Nuno (although he did well briefly under Jose), and he is now finally playing for a manager who has given him the license to express himself.
