‘Give him a chance’ – Pundit wants to see 18-year-old in Spurs starting XI

Former Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison is at a loss as to why Ange Postecoglou is not giving an opportunity to Ashley Phillips.

Phillips arrived from Blackburn Rovers last summer after a breakthrough season in the Championship last term.

The 18-year-old has impressed alongside Alfie Dorrington in Premier League 2 and the pair have also partnered with each other at the back on multiple occasions for England’s Under-19s.

While Phillips has been named on the bench several times this season, the centre-back is still waiting for his elusive senior debut, even though Tottenham have had to deal with some big injury problems at the back.

Ange Postecoglou opted to once again start Emerson Royal at centre-back alongside Ben Davies against Bournemouth and when he needed extra defensive assurance at the back towards the dying stages of the game, he opted to bring on Eric Dier over the teenager.

Should Ashley Phillips get a chance for Tottenham?

Morrison urged the Australian to throw Phillips in so that the youngster can show what he can do.

The pundit told Sky Sports (31/12/23 1:25 pm): “Why not give the youngsters an opportunity?  The young lad Phillips came in from Blackburn, why not give him a chance? Give him a chance next to Ben Davies. I understand it’s a big game.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I notice that a section of Spurs fans on social media have also been quite critical of Postecoglou for not giving opportunities to Phillips and Dorrington.

The reality is that none of us know if these guys are ready for the Premier League level and we have to trust the judgement of Ange and the coaching staff, who watch these players train regularly.
