Heung-min Son addresses Tottenham’s potential Premier League title challenge

Tottenham Hotspur may be just six points off the top of the Premier League table, but Heung-min Son has insisted the team are not thinking about any kind of title challenge right now and are just taking each game as it comes.

After a disastrous campaign last season, twinned with the sale of Harry Kane in the summer, many pundits and fans expected Tottenham to struggle this term, especially with a new manager at the helm.

But Ange Postecoglou has worked miracles so far this season, implementing a new style of football very quickly at the club and getting the performances and results required to compete for one of the top spots in the division.

As things stand, Spurs are just one point off the top four, and six points off Liverpool at the summit of the Premier League at the halfway stage of the season.

Are Tottenham in the Premier League title race?

In one of the most competitive campaigns in recent years, a five-horse title race appears to be forming, with Spurs still in the mix. But when speaking to the Evening Standard, Spurs skipper Heung-min Son played down the idea.

He said: “Everybody is very close in the title race but we don’t really want to talk about it because there are still games to play and we’re still missing many important players. We’re going to focus on ourselves and game by game give everything.

“We try not to focus on any other teams, approach it looking for better football and better mentality and then we’ll see what happens at the end of the season. There has been a lot of change [at the club], 100 per cent. But everybody is taking a big responsibility.

“It is a big credit when compared to the last couple of years. Those lads are working really hard, we are not talking about where we are now or how many points we have. That is a good sign. We are just focused game by game, just want to win every single game.

“We also have made some mistakes and you learn that you can’t win 38 games in the Premier League because it is so tough. Focus on ourselves, not look at the table and just see what happens.”

I think this is the best approach, particularly for the players. They have to remain focused on the next game only, and not worry about the bigger picture. But for sure Ange Postecoglou will be reminding them regularly that they are worthy of being part of the title race.
