Heung-min Son admits he wants his Tottenham teammate to stay at the club long-term

Son Heung-min has hailed Timo Werner for his recent form and admitted that he is hopeful that the forward will remain at Tottenham beyond the end of the season.

The Werner signing has proven a masterstroke for Spurs, with the pacy wideman proving a valuable addition to Ange Postecoglou’s side since arriving on loan from RB Leipzig in January.

The German international has five goal contributions to his name in 10 league appearances since his arrival at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and Son remarked that the 28-year-old has grown in confidence over the last couple of months.

The Tottenham captain told Yahoo Sport about Werner after the 1-1 draw at the London Stadium: “I think he listened to what the gaffer asked for. The way we approach the game, the wingers are very important, staying wide and being in the right position. And Timo and Brennan are doing a great job, both understanding each other.

“When he came to Tottenham, [Timo] was missing a little bit of confidence, but now you can see he’s playing with confidence and more comfortable — missing a few chances, but that will come. He’s doing a great job, but as I always said, he’s a Golden Boot winner in the Bundesliga and we expect he’ll score and give assists more for the team, because we have massive games ahead.”

Heung-min Son wants Timo Werner to stay at Spurs

Tottenham have a £15m option to buy Werner this summer and reports indicate that the forward is keen on remaining at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium beyond this season (TEAMtalk).

It remains to be seen what decision Spurs make on the on-loan Leipzig star but Son admitted that he would love to see his teammate remain at the club.

When asked about Werner potentially making a permanent move, the South Korean responded: “I always want to make good friends and good team-mates, but in football, there are no guarantees and the club will make a decision. But Timo would happily stay here, I can see that.

“As a player, I want to help him so he has a better option than right now. That’s a team-mate’s job. We’ll see what’s going to happen at the end of the season. I can say I want him to stay.”

While Werner has proven a useful addition to the squad, Postecoglou would have also noted the fact that he has integrated well into the dressing room since his arrival.

The Australian values squad harmony highly and he might take that into account while making the eventual decision on whether to sign the German.
