Heung-min Son urges three Spurs teammates to ‘step up’ in his absence

With Heung-min Son heading off on international duty for the Asia Cup, the Spurs skipper has told his club teammates to ‘step up’ while he’s gone and score the goals to keep the team challenging at the top.

Since he was handed the captaincy in the summer, Heung-min Son has been in scintillating form for Tottenham, and has led Ange Postecoglou‘s side admirably in the first half of the season.

Spurs are currently fifth in the Premier League table, just one point behind fourth-placed Arsenal and only six points away from the top of the league. That success is largely down to the performances of Son, who has 12 goals and five assists to his name already (Transfermarkt).

Unfortunately, the Lilywhites will now be without their captain as he participates in the Asia Cup for South Korea. There’s a chance—should his country go all the way in the tournament—that Son will miss the entirety of January and the first week of February.

Heung-min Son wants goals from Spurs teammates

The likes of Richarlison, Dejan Kulusevski, and Brennan Johnson will now be tasked with contributing in his absence, and Son has urged his teammates to do just that.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, Son said: “They are my family and my team-mates. I hope they can score as many goals as possible.

“I feel [it’s] like when Harry was here and he was missing some games with injuries. I felt like I needed to step up in previous years, I hope our players have this kind of feeling that they need to step up.

“In this situation, you grow as a player and a human being. Richy is doing a fantastic job, I hope he is hungry for more goals, also Deki [Kulusevski] and Brennan.

“I hope everybody who is playing attacking positions can score as many goals as possible and bring us to a better position. I wish it more than anything else.”

Hopefully, Richarlison has hit form just at the right time and he can carry us through this next month, but I also really feel like big things are coming from Brennan Johnson, too. Either way, I love this message from Son: it’s exactly what a captain should do to motivate his peers.
