‘His destiny’ – Ange Postecoglou comments on Eric Dier’s future at Spurs

Speaking to the press ahead of the weekend’s FA Cup action, Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou was asked about Eric Dier’s status within the squad and what the future may hold for the defender, and he had a typically pragmatic response.

Eric Dier is coming up to a decade at Tottenham, having joined the club from Sporting Lisbon back in 2014. He has now made 364 appearances for the Lilywhites, registering 13 goals and 12 assists over the years (Transfermarkt).

Despite being a first-team regular under Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho, and Antonio Conte, Dier has found himself on the fringes of Ange Postecoglou‘s squad this year. The 29-year-old has made just four appearances this term, totalling 198 minutes of action (Transfermarkt).

With his current contract set to expire in the summer, Dier’s time at Tottenham looks set to come to an end either now or at the end of the season. Dier has been linked with a move to Fenerbahce and AS Roma (TEAMtalk), among other clubs.

Eric Dier is in control of his own destiny

In his latest press conference (via Charlie Eccleshare), Postecoglou was asked what we can expect to happen with Dier and whether he wants to keep the player. As we have come to expect from Postecoglou by now, his reply was rather matter-of-fact.

He said: “I think Eric is contracted to this football club, and he’s as much in control of his destiny as anyone else.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I believe that as soon as we can confirm the signing of Radu Dragusin (or an alternative centre-half), we will start to seriously look at offloading Eric Dier within this transfer window.

It would make sense to get him off the payroll as soon as possible, and there is a chance we could even get a small fee for him, too.
