‘I was really excited’ – Postecoglou thinks new signing will fit in well at Spurs

Ange Postecoglou has revealed that he was really excited when Tottenham’s recruitment team put Timo Werner’s name on the table, with the Australian admitting that he expects the German international to be a good fit for his system.

The arrival of Werner gives Postecoglou a lot of options in the forward area, with the former Chelsea man capable of operating across the front three.

It has been reported over the past few days by various outlets (including The Athletic) that the Spurs head coach has been a long-time admirer of the 27-year-old, who is said to have ticked all the boxes for the Australian coach.

The publication added that Werner’s tactical versatility was a big factor for Postecoglou while reports on the forward’s character were also said to be very positive, with the player described as being ‘highly motivated, conscientious, and team-focused’.

The Athletic also suggested that the fact that the former Chelsea man has played in the Premier League and lived in London was also a factor, with the Tottenham boss wanting any new signing to hit the ground running.

Postecoglou is really excited to have Timo Werner

When asked about Werner’s arrival, Postecoglou has now told Football.London: “It’s fair to say Leipzig play a little bit differently now and somebody like Timo, the system they play doesn’t necessarily suit him and he does have some competition.

“It’s fair to say that if Timo was playing regularly and scoring goals, he wouldn’t be here. We wouldn’t be able to afford him. It’s as simple as that. You’re looking for these opportunities and potentially looking beyond the obvious to say, ‘there’s an opportunity here’.

“When Johan [Lange – Tottenham’s technical director] presented it to me, I was really excited by it because I thought ‘here’s an opportunity that normally wouldn’t come across our desk at this point in time where we are as a club’.

“Our priority was the centre-back position but I could see some real possibilities for him playing in our system that maybe at Leipzig, where they’ve changed the way they play maybe the opportunities wouldn’t be as plentiful for him there.”

Spurs Web Opinion

The Werner deal has high potential upsides as we know that the forward can be a nightmare to play against when he is at his best. It sounds like Ange is relatively confident of being able to get the best out of the 27-year-old.
