Journalist reveals how much Spurs will pay for Timo Werner’s salary

With Timo Werner set to join Tottenham Hotspur on a loan deal until the end of the season, Sky Sports reporter Philipp Hinze has revealed how much of the player’s salary the Lilywhites will pay.

In a surprising twist in the early stages of the January transfer window, former Chelsea man Timo Werner is set to join Tottenham on loan for six months. The story, which came out of nowhere, was first broken by journalist Florian Plettenberg.

Ange Postecoglou has been keen to sign a new winger to bolster his attacking options, particularly with skipper Heung-min Son away at the Asia Cup this month. However, there had been no foreshadowing suggesting Werner was ever a target.

Things have moved very quickly since the story first emerged, with Fabrizio Romano claiming medical tests have been booked for Werner and that the player will start training with Spurs in the week ahead.

A report from The Athletic has shed further light on the situation, revealing Spurs can make the move permanent for between £12.9-17.2m. It is also said there that the Lilywhites will cover Werner’s full salary for the duration of his stay.

Timo Werner’s salary explained

Thanks to Philipp Hinze, we know exactly what that will cost Spurs. Hinze tweeted: “As exclusively reported this afternoon, Tottenham will take over Timo Werner’s entire salary. That is around €5m (£4.3m) until the summer.”

With this in mind, it’s safe to assume Werner earns roughly £8.6m per year, which makes him the fourth-highest earner on the Spurs payroll, behind James Maddison, Ivan Perisic, and Son (fifth if you include Tanguy Ndombele).

Hinze also offers a more precise figure for Tottenham’s purchase option on Werner, suggesting it would cost £14.6-15.5m to sign the 27-year-old permanently.

That is a pretty hefty salary, but considering we are loaning Werner and don’t appear to be paying a loan fee, it’s a fair deal. We could really win big from this move, if Werner succeeds under Ange, and we end up signing him permanently for £15m, it’s a steal.
