Journalist thinks Daniel Levy will ‘have a little nibble’ at one particular transfer deal

Journalist Paul Brown has backed Tottenham to launch a late offer for Conor Gallagher but opined that the Lilywhites will not sign an alternative if they fail to land the Chelsea midfielder.

With each passing day, it looks less and less likely that Spurs will be able to wrap up a deal for Gallagher before the February 1 deadline.

In fact, Football Insider reported a couple of days ago that Tottenham have admitted defeat in their pursuits of their top three midfield targets – Gallagher, Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips (now on loan at West Ham) and Atalanta’s Ederson.

The report suggested that the Lilywhites are thus expected to put off their pursuit of a number eight until next summer and are set to keep Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg at the club until the end of the season.

Spurs have not given up on Gallagher

Brown has now said that he still expects Daniel Levy to test Chelsea’s resolve by launching an offer for the England international in the final few days of the window.

However, the journalist suggested that Ange Postecoglou’s men will be happy to stick with what they have if they are unable to secure the Chelsea star’s services.

Brown told GiveMeSport: “Spurs have been interested in Gallagher for a long time, but they just think the price is too high.

“I would still expect Daniel Levy to have a little nibble before the end of the window, but probably quite late in the day just to test, and it will be a real test of Chelsea’s business plan if Spurs were to come in with a semi-decent offer.

“But I don’t think it’s a case of, if we don’t get Gallagher we must get someone else. I think Spurs will try for Gallagher but not in any major way before the end of the window. If they don’t get him, they will be happy to stick with what they’ve got.”

While Chelsea might be tempted to cash in on Gallagher, the question remains over whether the 23-year-old would be keen on leaving his boyhood club so late in the window, particularly given that he continues to be valued highly by Pochettino.

The chances of this deal going through appears quite slim and with Hojbjerg also no closer to the exit door, it does look increasingly likely that Tottenham will put off their pursuit of a midfielder until next summer.
