Journalist thinks rumour linking midfielder with Spurs has ‘got legs’ in January

The Daily Mail’s Sami Mokbel has said that the rumours linking Conor Gallagher with a move to Tottenham have got legs, revealing that Chelsea will cash in on their academy graduate for the right price.

Over the last couple of days, we have heard some contradictory information regarding how far along Tottenham are in their pursuit of Gallagher.

Over the weekend, Gianluca Di Marzio said that Spurs and Chelsea have begun talks over a £40m deal for the midfielder. However, Football London’s Alasdair Gold revealed the very next day that the talks of Tottenham’s move for Gallagher are ‘premature’ at the moment.

Gold explained that while Spurs are continuing to monitor the England international’s situation they might wait until the end of the window to make a move for the player if Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg departs.

Chelsea’s FFP concerns may drive Gallagher sale

Mokbel has now said that there is definitely some truth to the rumours linking Gallagher with a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The journalist pointed out that the Blues have to sell some of their assets in order to be able to get around FFP regulations and pursue their transfer targets, suggesting that an offer of £50m-£60m for the 23-year-old would be difficult for them to turn down.

When asked about the speculation linking Gallagher with a switch to Spurs, Mokbel told It’s All Kicking Off podcast: “That’s a deal that’s got legs.

“It’s incredible really, Gallagher is the de facto captain at Chelsea, he’s playing every week, and yet, he’s a player that at the right price is available in January.

“I think it’s madness, history tells us that under the new regime at Chelsea, they look at academy players as vehicles around FFP regulations.

“It’s clear that Chelsea need reinforcements, and they’re now looking at Gallagher with 18 months left of his contract, they’re trying to tie him down to a new one, but they’re looking at Gallagher and thinking if they can get towards £50m-60m while his contract is still up in the air they should be doing that.”

I do not think Tottenham would be willing to pay more than £40m-£45m for Gallagher, especially given his current contract situation. It remains to be seen if such an offer is enough to persuade Chelsea to sell the midfielder.
