Spurs are trying to find the balance

Speaking to Business of Sport, Non-Executive Director at Tottenham, Jonathan Turner, has offered an insight into how the club is trying to achieve success on and off the pitch, and what that balance looks like.

He said: “The strategy that we’re pursuing is a very clear one. And that strategy is to succeed on the pitch with both men’s and women’s teams. But to build a long term sustainable business.

“It’s an incredibly competitive league, which is great. That’s what we all love. We’re not frightened of the competition, but we’re also up against some very different competitors, some of which have a lot more capital than we do, and we have to find a way to compete against them.

“We want success on the pitch, but you have to balance the preservation of what is not just a company, but it’s a franchise and an institution that matters immensely not just to the fans, but within the community.”

With that in mind, Turner expands his point and outlines the manner in which Spurs can achieve these goals: “What we’re really focused on is not the mission, but it’s more… how do we execute the business plan in the optimal way to deliver that success?

“And, and that’s through the investments that we make. So we may make a very deep investment in the technology side of the business, because we think that will deliver a great fan experience. The better the fan experience, the better the engagement with the fans, and that ultimately creates value across all areas.”

Tottenham are poised for success

At present, Tottenham have one of the best stadiums in the world, and are one of the clubs in the most comfortable position in the Premier League when it comes to Profitability and Sustainability Rules.

With Ange Postecoglou at the helm, it seems the club has a clear footballing vision now, and there is a belief that trophies will follow in the near future.

Spurs Web Opinion

It’s very obvious that the football club is being ran as a business first, and a football club second in many ways. That balance does need to be addressed somewhat, in my opinion, but you cannot deny that the economical and commercial side of things at Spurs are very impressive and offer us a very sustainable platform to build upon.
