‘Objectives and aims’ – Ange Postecoglou discusses Tottenham transfer plans

The January transfer window may be open right now, but speaking ahead of Tottenham’s FA Cup clash with Burnley tomorrow, it’s clear Ange Postecoglou is firmly focused on the upcoming game rather than any potential signings.

After last season’s dismal efforts across all competitions, there were fairly low expectations placed on Tottenham this year, especially given the fact this was Ange Postecoglou‘s first foray into English football.

However, at the halfway point of the campaign, Spurs are within touching distance of the title race, and many fans are now hopeful the club can finally achieve some success with their new manager, be it this season or in the near future.

Tottenham have a long history of success in the FA Cup, winning the competition eight times over the years, but the Lilywhites have not lifted the trophy since 1991. Postecoglou will be looking to change that, starting tomorrow.

If Spurs are to be successful at all, however, the squad requires some reinforcements. A new centre-back is thought to be the top priority this month, with Radu Dragusin earmarked as someone who could join the club soon (Telegraph).

Postecoglou isn’t involved in transfer activity

In his latest press conference (via Football.London), Postecoglou was asked about the chances of Spurs signing a centre-back early on in the winter window, but he appeared to suggest this is not something he can shed any light on.

Postecoglou said: “It’s hard to say because I don’t get involved in that. We have some objectives and aims and we’re working towards them.

“People behind the scenes and in charge of those areas are working towards that and my role within that is when I’m sought for guidance and clarity on which way we need to go, I provide that.”

On whether there is a set number of players he wants, Postecoglou added: “No, it doesn’t work that way. There are a lot of moving parts in a window like this.

“Like I said, in January you don’t expect too much in terms of activity but again I’ve said before is that every opportunity we have to strengthen the team, strengthen the squad, we should try and take. Depending on sort of the opportunities we have to do that this month, we’ll try and do.”

Spurs Web Opinion

We already know that Postecoglou has very little involvement in the transfer side of things at Spurs, apart from detailing what kind of player he wants and having some form of approval as to whether a target is the right fit. In terms of the actual negotiations and finalising these signings, that’s down to the likes of Johan Lange and Fabio Paratici.
