‘Oh my god’ – Ollie Watkins cannot believe what he has heard about Spurs

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins was bemused to learn that Tottenham’s home ground is simply called the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

It has now been almost five years since Spurs moved from White Hart Lane to their 62,850-seat venue, which sits on the same site as the old venue.

Unlike the issues that fans of some other clubs have experienced when they have moved stadiums (such as West Ham’s switch from Upton Park to the London Stadium), Tottenham’s transition to the venue has been smooth.

That is perhaps because the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium has managed to retain the atmosphere of White Hart Lane.

Now that fans are excited about the new project under Ange Postecoglou, we have seen just how boisterous and atmospheric the stadium can be, and many have labelled the stadium the best in the Premier League (talkSPORT).

Watkins cannot believe what Spurs stadium is called

However, with the naming rights of the stadium yet to be sold, the venue is still called by its generic name, which came as a surprise to Watkins.

The striker was taking part in the popular game ‘lies’ along with his Villa teammate Matty Cash on Sky Sports and he was asked to name eight Premier League Stadiums inside 30 seconds.

He failed to name Spurs’ stadium and when he was informed that they are just called the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Watkins responded “Oh my God. They need to get a new name, don’t they?”

Daniel Levy and the Spurs board will love the fact that the generic name, ‘Tottenham Hotspur Stadium’, has stuck, which means that potential naming rights sponsors can rest assured that there is value in the deal.

The Spurs hierarchy might have had fears that fans and pundits would continue referring to it as White Hart Lane, which would have potentially put off potential sponsors as it is not easy for a new sponsorship name to enter the lingo in cases like that.

For example, Newcastle’s stadium continued to be referred to as St James Park even when it was re-named the Sports Direct Arena for a time being while many still refer to the Brentford Community Stadium rather than the Gtech Community Stadium.
