Opinion: What will Spurs look like post-Kane? – Plus three striker replacements

If you ask any football fan, ‘who is the first player you think of when you hear Tottenham Hotspur?’ they will say Harry Kane.

After 14 years, it looks like Harry Kane is nearing his exit from N17 with his contract coming to an end and reports insinuating that he is currently not looking to sign a new deal (Alasdair Gold).

As much as it will hurt to see him go, we will need to look forward to how we can replace everything he does for us.

With 280 goals for the club (transfermarkt.co.uk) it’s going to be almost impossible for anyone to follow our record top goal scorer, however, here is my take on what Postecoglou and Levy could look at doing to keep Tottenham firing.

The biggest question is, ‘who will be our new number nine?’. Luckily for us, there are a multitude of good young strikers who could look to follow in Kane’s footsteps and lead the line for our club.

With no European football, it may be tricky to entice them here, however, the promise of first-team football and leading a historic team in the Premier League would be tough to turn down I am sure.

Who could Tottenham get to replace Kane?

Tottenham hold an interest in 25-year-old, Udinese striker Beto (Nath Gissing). Although it’s good to see we are looking forward to the eventuality of Kane leaving, I’m sure you all agree that the potential replacement signing of the Portuguese striker does feel quite uninspiring.

Looking at Postecoglou’s style of football, we can see that out of possession, he likes his players to press high and suffocate the opposition as they try to work out from the back.

That intensity begins with the 3 forward players so you’d imagine the best fit would be a striker ready to work hard to win the ball for the full 90 minutes.

My number one option would be 23-year-old, Canadian international, Jonathan David. After a prolific season in Ligue 1 last year scoring 24 and assisting 6 in 37 matches (transfermarkt.co.uk) it feels like the right time for him to take that next step.

Lille has been a great club for his development, but off of that last season, we can see he’s ready for a bigger challenge, and what could be bigger than trying to take over from one of the greatest Premier League strikers the world has ever seen?

French striker, Randal Kolo Muanai, and Montpellier youngster Elye Wahi could also be possible suggestions. Overall, these three young centre forwards all possess the most vital trait I believe is needed to succeed at our club and in this league. Hunger.

We want players ready to give it their all out there on the pitch and I believe they can fit in well with the young squad Postecoglu is assembling and the ideologies that revolve around Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.

One thing I want to make clear is I don’t believe Tottenham can replace Harry Kane directly. For a player to come into the club and deliver how Harry Kane has over the past years would be unfathomable.

But if Tottenham could secure one of these strikers and develop the squad around them to suit Postecoglou’s system, I believe the bleeding we might have thought we’d see from the loss of Kane, may be less than imagined.

If Tottenham want to challenge the teams around them we need to create competition in every position. We see Manchester City having almost 22 players who comfortably perform when given the opportunity.

Over the years, we have seen players, who let’s be honest, haven’t been good enough, forced into the squad due to injuries or after sales. We now need to look at signings that will push players to perform week in week out and create that contention to keep us playing with the best.

The sale of Kane will garner a big fee and after the purchase of a new striker, I hope we reinvest that money into creating that competition in every area of the pitch.

I am going to be devastated when Kane eventually leaves us, and if we can convince him to sign a new deal then I am all for it, but it’s realistic to now look ahead and I believe this could be a good way to move on from what has been the best striker our club has ever had.
