Postecoglou confirms he wants Spurs to strengthen key area in the summer

Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that Tottenham Hotspur are looking for options to strengthen at centre-back in the summer despite the arrival of Radu Dragusin in January.

Postecoglou now has three top centre-backs at his disposal in the form of Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Dragusin while Ben Davies has also shown this season that he is capable of operating in the centre of the defence in the Australian’s system.

However, the Lilywhites continue to be linked with defenders, with Eintracht Frankfurt’s Willian Pacho being the latest player to be mooted as a target for the club (Sacha Tavolieri).

The North London club are also rumoured to have their eyes on some emerging young centre-backs, including Hull City’s Jacob Greaves (Daily Mirror – 10/03, page 61) and Bologna’s Riccardo Calafiori (Calciomercato.it).

Spurs want another centre-back this summer

Postecoglou has now confirmed that Tottenham have already started work on finding options to further reinforce their backline in the summer.

When asked if he is happy with the options he has at centre-back, the Spurs boss told Football.London: “If you’re saying ‘is it an area we can strengthen?’, yes it’s an area we will probably look at. With all these things it’s about trying to strengthen the group as much as anything else.

“If you think about when I first arrived, we had maybe six or seven centre-backs at the club. So it’s not just numbers. It’s more about the ability of those players to play the football we want and to fit in to what we’re trying to build here.

“I think it is an area of the park we will look to strengthen, but I think we’ll look to strengthen all areas of the park come the end of the season. That’s planning that’s already underway, and other people are in charge of it at the moment.”

Spurs Web Opinion

We have already seen this season that Postecoglou’s high-intensity approach leads to more muscle injuries than usual. Given that we will also be in Europe next season, it is not surprising that the 58-year-old wants another quality centre-back option.
