Report: Club hope to finalise deal with Tottenham for defender this week

Sport have claimed that Barcelona hope to reach a full agreement over the sale of Clement Lenglet to Tottenham by the end of this week.

The report states that Barca want the deal to be completed quickly as they do not want Lenglet to report back to the club for pre-season.

It is said that while there is ‘no definitive agreement’ between the two clubs, the Catalan giants are hoping to ‘close the transfer’ quickly’.

The deal allegedly took a ‘definitive step’ last week when Lenglet agreed on personal terms with Tottenham on a three-year deal, which will allegedly see the Frenchman become one of the highest-paid players at the North London club.

Spurs could be getting closer to a Lenglet transfer

Sport add that Barca were hoping to get €15m (£12.8m) from the centre-back’s sale but could now agree to a deal of around €10m (£8.5m) plus add-ons as they want to save on the wages owed to the 27-year-old.

This report comes a few days after the print edition of AS (via Sport Witness) claimed that Tottenham are prepared to play the waiting game to sign Lenglet since the Lilywhites know that the La Liga giants do not want to pay the former Sevilla star’s wages.

All signs now point to Spurs signing Lenglet as cover for Micky Van de Ven in the left centre-back role.

That might not sit well with some Tottenham fans, who might want the club to sign two left-sided central defenders.

However, it is important to remember that the whole squad cannot be overhauled in one transfer window. Lenglet can perhaps do a job for one more season before being moved on next summer.
