Report: Levy’s transfer strategy revealed as Spurs have huge advantage over rivals

The Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick has suggested that Tottenham Hotspur will continue targeting players from the Premier League clubs who are trying to balance their books by selling some of their assets.

The report points to the fact that a whole host of clubs across the Premier League, including some of Tottenham’s direct rivals, are not in a position to spend money without selling some of their players if they are to comply with the league’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Kilpatrick says that Spurs have no such concerns as the club are comfortably in line with the PSR rules after spending within their means for years.

The journalist says that Tottenham are the only club in the Premier League whose annual wage bill is less than half of their revenue, which puts the club in a very healthy financial position.

Tottenham can spend more than their rivals

Kilpatrick suggests that as some of Tottenham’s rivals look to reign in their spending to ensure they do not get hit with sanctions, the Lilywhites are looking to spend ambitiously.

The journalist points out that Spurs will target players from clubs who are in a difficult financial position, just as they did when they signed Richarlison and Brennan Johnson from Everton and Nottingham Forest respectively, and that is why they are after Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher.

It is alleged that Daniel Levy knows that despite the hyperinflated nature of the English market, there is value in players at clubs who are desperately looking to balance their books.

Tottenham’s long-term strategy was always going to be vindicated if the Premier League were to get serious about implementing their financial regulations, which they now thankfully seem to have, perhaps over fears of an independent regulator being appointed.
