Report: PL player Spurs held talks with in January is about to seal transfer elsewhere

HITC claim that Everton centre-back Ben Godfrey, who was wanted by Tottenham earlier this year, has been the subject of plenty of transfer interest after the Toffees put him up for sale.

Ben Godfrey is set to join Atalanta

The report says that both Tottenham and Newcastle United showed interest in Godfrey during the January window and even held talks with Everton over a deal but both sides were ultimately unsuccessful in their pursuits.

The outlet claims several Premier League sides are still watching the former Norwich City man without naming who those clubs are.

However, the primary interest for the England international has allegedly come from abroad, with multiple sides having submitted bids this summer.

The race for Ben Godfrey is heating up

HITC claim Serie A side Atalanta and Ligue 1 giants Lyon have both offered £10m for the 26-year-old but that is not expected to be enough to prise the player away from Goodison Park.

The publication adds that Everton would be willing to sell Godfrey for £15m and that Sean Dyche’s men are even ready to offer the new defender a new contract if he stays at the club.

Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has also shared his insight into Godfrey’s future by revealing that Everton and Atalanta have verbally agreed on a deal and the player is keen to complete the switch.

He took to X to write: “Atalanta have verbally agreed on deal to sign Ben Godfrey from Everton on fee in excess of €10m plus add-ons.

“Godfrey’s preference was always Serie A with contract terms being finalized and then medical booked this weekend.

“Here we go.”

Godfrey could be a good stylistic fit for Ange, given that he is quick and good on the ball while he can also cover at right-back.

However, one would think that Postecoglou would prefer to sign a defender of a higher calibre, even though it is only a backup that Tottenham are after.
