Report: Player set to rejoin Tottenham after break clause triggered in loan deal

Sergio Reguilon will return to Tottenham Hotspur as his loan deal with Manchester United has come to an end, and the decision has been taken by the Red Devils not to extend his stay.

With Manchester United struggling with various injuries—particularly in the left-back area with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia out of action—Sergio Reguilon moved to Old Trafford at the end of the summer in something of a surprise move.

The six-month loan deal included an option to extend for the remainder of the season or break off the agreement in January, and was something that would be decided by Tottenham, Manchester United, and Reguilon himself (BILD).

Reguilon has made 12 appearances for Manchester United across all competitions in the first half of the campaign (Transfermarkt) and had endeared himself to the supporters there.

However, there has been speculation linking the Spaniard with a switch to Borussia Dortmund instead, with the German outfit keen on a six-month loan move (Patrick Berger).

Sergio Reguilon heading back to Spurs

What the future holds for Reguilon is unclear, but we now know that he will be returning to Tottenham Hotspur, at least for the meantime.

That is according to a report from The Athletic, who reveal United have opted to activate the “break clause” in Reguilon’s contract and the “decision has been made for him to return to Spurs.”

However, Reguilon has only played for Manchester United this season, meaning he would be allowed to move elsewhere during the January transfer window should Ange Postecoglou deem him surplus to requirements once more.

I expect we shall see Reguilon move on another loan deal to another club very soon. Postecoglou very likely doesn’t want him or need him, and I imagine there will be a few clubs interested in signing the Spaniard this month.
