Report: Premier League boss asks his board not to sell player amid Spurs links

Speculation continues to mount surrounding the future of Conor Gallagher, but a new report claims Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino does not want the club to sell the midfielder this month.

Historically speaking, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea do not do business with one another—especially in the last decade. It has come as a surprise to many then, that Conor Gallagher has been linked away from Stamford Bridge, with Tottenham mooted as a possible destination.

Just last week, Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio claimed the two clubs were in negotiations to discuss a £40m switch for the England midfielder. However, later on the same day, the Evening Standard dismissed those reports and suggested no talks were taking place.

That hasn’t stopped the rumour mill from turning, though, and the Telegraph’s Matt Law has since suggested Spurs would be interested in pursuing a move for Gallagher, but only if Chelsea drop their asking price.

Pochettino doesn’t want Gallagher to go

Whether Gallagher would be sold or not, and for how much, remains to be seen, but one person who doesn’t want the player to leave Chelsea is his manager, Mauricio Pochettino. In a report from London World it is suggested the Blues boss has told his board not to sanction the sale of Gallagher.

Instead, Pochettino has asked for Gallagher to be offered a “new deal” at Chelsea as he views the player as a “pivotal” part of the project he is building at the club. Gallagher was named as part of Pochettino’s leadership group and has captained the team this season.

Pochettino is thought to be keen to put together an “English core” at Chelsea and the report claims he sees Gallagher as a big part of the “foundation” of this plan.

I have never believed that this deal would happen, to be honest. I would love to see Gallagher join Spurs, but it’s hard to imagine that Gallagher himself would want to move to a London rival, Pochettino obviously doesn’t want to lose his captain, and Chelsea would surely fear backlash from fans if they did sell him to Spurs.
